FANTASTIC U.S.S. MAINE GROUPING OF A MICHIGAN SAILOR INCLUDING PHOTOS OF THE SECOND BURIAL OF THE ORIGINAL MAINE SAILORS KILLED IN CUBA - 38 piece archive of U.S.S. Maine material ( the second Maine) belonging to Frederick F. McGuire of Saginaw, Michigan who was on the Maine until 1907. The group contains 19 photographs, 12 documents including his Discharge, his Coxswain Appointment, Pension papers, etc., a U.S.S. Maine hatband (the original owner of the group had two of these and sold the extra for $500.), 2 gunnery patches, 2 lanyards (mint condition), a 1902 Petty Officers Drill Book, and one notepad with extensive notes on the armament of the ship along with the ammunition, gun crews, notes on aiding wounded, etc.        Included in the photographs (most of them in large format - on the 'additional images' page the sizes are beneath the images) are 7 photos which are supposed to be (according to the family) the burial of the Sailors of the original U.S.S. Maine. This was the second burial when the ship had been recovered several years after the War to recover the trapped bodies inside then taking the ship out to her final resting place in the ocean. These photos I believe to be unpublished as I have been unable to find any references or publications with these included. They consist of the arrival of the bodies by boat, the funeral procession to the cemetery and the burial scene showing a mass number of fresh graves. The photos had been numbered to show the sequence of events. Quite a nice and historical group of images. Other photos show the Maine, one docked next to the U.S.S. Missouri. There are also images of McGuire and some of his sailor friends (unfortunately these are unmarked). A very nice and historical grouping which also shows the tight bond between the original U.S.S. Maine and it's namesake and that solemn chore of the recovery and proper burial of those that had been still trapped in the ship after the explosion in Havana that triggered the Spanish-American War. Some photos have small chips in the mounts and an occasional mar in the photo itself but overall a group in very good condition.
$ 2950.
